About the city

With a population of just over 326,000 people, Bari is the second largest city on the southern part of the Italian mainland. Situated on the Adriatic Coast, the city is a major industrial city in Southern Italy, and has been a major commercial, fishing and ferry port for centuries.

Dedicated to St. Nicholas, also known as Santa Claus, and was specially built to house his remains, which still lie in the crypt.

🏰 Positioned by the city's main entrance, a few steps away from the Cathedral, the Castle today welcomes visitors before they head into the narrow alleyways of the historic centre.

🏁 Built 12th century, Bari's Swabian Castle now serves as the headquarters of the Regional Directorate.

⛪ Located in the western part of the old town, steps away from the Norman Hohenstaufen castle.

On the neck of the headland, and safely out of the lanes of ill repute, are a couple of pleasant interlocking public squares, Piazza del Ferrarese and Piazza Mercantile.

Opposite the old port and overlooking the Augusto Imperatore seafront is the square.

🏁 At the back of the square there is the Starita palace, built on the ruins of an ancient arsenal.

Explore Vecchia Bari - Old Bari
The lanes of Vecchia Bari nearest to the church are the most touristy, with a line of little souvenir shops. On the other side of the church is a pleasant walkway along the old town walls with views over a road to the sea: this is a nice stroll if the narrow lanes are making you feel claustrophobic.

🏛️ Named after the well-known 18th-century Pugliese painter, the gallery houses a collection of medieval and modern art, with Venetian paintings, Neapolitan ceramics and nativity scenes, and paintings and icons from Puglia.

The old port, located SE of the city, is landlocked between the San Antonio pier and the S. Nicola pier. The port is subject to silting up and is subject to regular dredging.
